Activists petitioning to put local control of clean energy on ballot

FLUSHING, Mich. (WNEM) - Activists in Genesee County are collecting signatures for a petition calling for power to be given back to local governments.

In November last year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Clean Energy Future Bill. It aims to make Michigan use 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2040.

However, the group Citizens for Local Choice says a provision in it strips local governments and residents of having any input on solar or wind farms in their communities. That’s why they were collecting signatures on Thursday, April 18, at Riverview Park in Flushing.

“We’re not against solar. We’re not against wind. We’re for it for regular folks so they can afford to put it on their houses. Not to have big companies come in, squeeze out natural gas and all these other things so utilities go through the roof,” said Bill Bain, the captain of Citizens for Local Choice in Genesee County.
