More than 50,000 petitions have been distributed to volunteers across the state in an effort to repeal a law that allowed the state to seize local control of large-scale wind and solar projects.
Backed by Michigan Farm Bureau, Citizens for Local Choice is leading the fight to overturn the law signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last fall that transferred decisions on zoning and siting for energy projects from the state’s 1,240 local townships to the Michigan Public Service Commission — consisting of three members appointed by the governor.
Along with MFB — the first organization to back the effort — the petition is endorsed by the Michigan Association of Townships, Michigan Association of Counties, and Associated Builders and Contractors of Michigan.
