State approves petitions to restore local choice

The Citizens for Local Choice Ballot Committee advances to the next steps in the effort to restore local choice for siting of large-scale wind and solar operations as the final version of the petition has been accepted for filing by the State. The ballot campaign now moves forward to collect the required signatures to be placed on the ballot.


In November 2023, the Michigan House and Senate passed legislation that would eliminate local authority from siting and permitting of utility-scale wind and solar facilities and large battery storage facilities — moving these decisions to the Michigan Public Service Commission, an appointed state-level authority. The governor signed the legislation and it’s to go into effect in one year.
